The complete Beethoven sonatas by Artur Schnabel was published on 78s only in English HMV pressings. These HMV discs in general have the characteristic of being noisier in terms of their surface noise, but often have an exceptionally lively musical presence. Schnabel’s Beethoven has already been published many times on CD, always focusing on reducing or modifying this background noise. St-Laurent Studio presents them for the first time without any filtering, which makes it possible to hear much more harmonics of the piano, and to finally reveal all the interpretative subtleties of Artur Schnabel.
