Captured on 78s in May 1949, just before the advent and transition to magnetic tape and the long-playing record, these recordings remain among the rarest and least known of Edwin Fischer. He delivers here magnificent performances of two warhorses of the Romantic piano repertoire. In contradiction to what has sometimes been said about Fischer?s post-war recordings, he is here in top pianistic shape. His unique sound, at once virile, round, and velvety in the most intimate passages, is restored here in all its greatness. Edwin Fischer?s poetic, haunted vision of the second movement of the Brahms Sonata and the third movement of the Schumann, has rarely been equalled, yet even approached. This disc is made from superb British HMV pressings.
