The great Russian conductor Nicolai Malko (1883-1961), a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov, premiered the first two symphonies of Shostakovich. Invited to conduct the greatest orchestras, he also taught conducting (to Mravinsky, among others) : his conducting treatise served as actual basis for the American school of conducting. His recordings made for HMV with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London, and the Royal Danish Orchestra, were not widely diffused. His care for clarity, precision and his ear for constant polyphony, liberates the masterpieces of Russian music from any heaviness, excessive sentimentality or exaggeration, to extract their real, truthful feeling, nobility, and elegance. His conducting could be compared to Pierre Monteux’s, with its unique mixture of elegance, sharpness of attacks, and rhythmical effervescence. This volume marks the beginning of the reissue of the complete discography (78s and LPs) of Nicolai Malko , one of the most well-guarded treasures in the history of recorded music.
