Saint-Saëns’ Concerto no.4, performed by Alfred Cortot and Charles Munch remains one the greatest concerto recordings ever made. It was recorded in London in 1935, for the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth. The quality of the sound is probably one of the most remarkable of all the 78 rpm era. Our transfers are revelatory : stunning presence of both the piano and the orchestra, and a huge dynamic range that not only compares to, but surpasses some of today’s digital recordings. A disc for audiophiles! The recording of the Schumann Concerto with Cortot and Sir Landon Ronald is the second of three made by this tandem (1923, 1927, 1934), and the first recorded with the electric process. One hears Cortot in great form, both pianistically and musically, in a chamber-like interpretation of this famous work. --- YOU CAN LISTEN TO A BBC RADIO 3 BROADCAST OF THIS CD WITH COMMENTS IN « RADIO BROADCASTS »
